For many families, a Persian carpet is not just a floor covering. It may have come from a grandmother’s house, travelled across borders in a suitcase, or been chosen together at a bazaar. The same is true for hand-painted tiles, embroidered textiles, copperware and calligraphy. In a new country, these objects become a link to home. Good interior design gives them a place of honour.

Start with the carpet, not the sofa

Designers often choose a rug last. With a cherished carpet, do the opposite: let it set the palette for the room. Pick two or three colours from the carpet, for example its deep red, ivory and indigo, and repeat them in cushions, curtains or a single armchair. Keep walls and large furniture calm so the carpet remains the focus.

Choose the right room

  • Living or reception room: the classic place for the largest and finest carpet, where guests will see it.
  • Dining room: a carpet under the table defines the space; make sure chairs stay on it when pulled out.
  • Bedroom: smaller tribal or village rugs bring warmth beside the bed.
  • Wall hanging: a fragile or very precious piece can be hung on a wall, like art, using a proper hanging system that spreads the weight.

Mixing old and new

Traditional patterns look striking in modern rooms. A hand-knotted carpet under a simple, low sofa, or a set of patterned tiles as a kitchen backsplash, creates a dialogue between heritage and contemporary design. The key is balance: one or two strong traditional pieces per room, surrounded by simpler forms.

Patterns beyond the floor

  • Tiles: geometric and floral tile patterns work as a backsplash, around a fireplace, or on an entry floor.
  • Textiles: termeh, suzani or embroidered cloths can be used as table runners, cushion covers or framed panels.
  • Calligraphy and miniatures: a single framed piece above a console table can become the centre of a room.
  • Light: pierced metal lanterns cast patterned shadows that recall courtyards and bazaars.

Caring for carpets in a Canadian climate

Canadian winters bring dry indoor air from heating, and summers can be humid. Keep carpets out of strong direct sunlight to avoid fading, rotate them every so often for even wear, use a rug pad on hard floors, and have valuable pieces cleaned by specialists rather than with household machines. In basements, protect carpets from moisture.

Telling the story

Objects mean more when their story is known. Some families keep a small card or album with the origin of each carpet or piece. Children who grow up in Canada often treasure these stories most.
