How to plan a room layout
A good plan starts with the room, not the furniture. Measure the inside walls, note where the doors and windows sit, and decide how you will use the space. The planner above checks the basics for you: free space in front of cabinets and appliances, door swings, walkway width, and the clearance around a bed, a toilet or a kitchen island.
Which rooms can I plan?
Choose a kitchen, a bathroom or service room, a living room, a bedroom, or a small office or commercial space. Each room starts with layouts that follow common clearances. You can drag, rotate, resize or add items until the plan suits you, then pick a style, a main colour and a floor finish.
Are the clearances exact?
They are common planning guides, for example about 36 in (91 cm) in front of kitchen cabinets and about 24 in (61 cm) beside a bed. Building codes and products vary, so our designers check your final layout before anything is built.
Can I plan an L-shaped room, plumbing and outlets?
Yes. Start from a rectangle, an L, T or U shape, or draw your own corners. Mark water, drain, gas, outlets, switches and vents on the walls, add columns or beams, and set the direction of north. Switch to the 3D view to see the room from any side, then download the plan as a PDF.
What happens after I send my plan?
