Interior vs Exterior Rendering: Which Do You Need?

Both are 3D renderings, but they answer different questions. An exterior rendering shows how a building looks and sits in its setting. An interior rendering shows how it feels to be inside. Choosing the right one, or the right mix, depends on who you need to convince and what decision they have to make.

What exterior rendering shows

Exterior images show the shape of the building, its materials, its entrance, and how it relates to the street, the neighbours and the landscape. Daylight, dusk and night versions can all be useful: a daytime view for approvals and a dusk view with lit windows for marketing.

Typical uses: planning and neighbourhood presentations, developer brochures, investor decks and listing pages for buildings that are not yet built. The 1901 Lodge Drive project is a good example: its renders show the massing, the materials, the garage and how the house sits on the street.

What interior rendering shows

Interior images show layout, finishes, furniture and light. They help a client understand whether a room works, not only how it looks. Kitchens, living rooms, reception areas and offices are the most common subjects.

Typical uses: design approvals, choosing finishes, showing a client the result before work starts, and marketing for apartments or commercial spaces. In the Mr. Rafiei Home project, the views of the kitchen island, the dining area and the bedrooms each show a different part of the design.

How to choose

  • Selling or presenting a new building: start with two or three exterior views, then add a few key interiors (living area, kitchen, a typical office floor).
  • Renovating or designing a single space: interior views of the rooms you are changing are more useful than an exterior.
  • Planning approval: exterior and context views usually matter most.
  • Marketing before construction: a balanced set of both. Exterior to catch attention, interior to build emotion.

Getting the most from your set

Pick views that tell a story: arrival, main living space, the feature that makes the project special. Avoid ordering ten similar images. Agree day or night versions in the brief, and tell the studio who will see the images, so the style, camera height and level of detail suit the audience.

Not sure what you need? Send us your drawings and the purpose of the project, and we will suggest a short list of views. See our exterior and interior rendering services for examples.
